Meet Luz Checo
Luz Checo's journey at CUIMC started with Hilltop Café seven years ago as a supervisor at one of their on-campus café locations. Today, she is a heavy cleaner with Campus Operations and an avid cyclist who bikes to campus every day from Palisades, New Jersey. Luz recently shared how her journey reflects pride in her Hispanic heritage, dedication to her work, and deep family bonds.
What is your favorite thing about your current role?
The routine and the people I get to work with.
How long have you been at CUIMC?
Yanilin and I used to work for a Hilltop Café, and we started at Campus Operations on the same day three years ago. When I first started, I was a custodial floater; now, I am a senior heavy cleaner.
Do you have any hidden talents?
I actually like to work out, and I’m pretty good at it.
What makes you smile?
My family, my daughters, and my siblings. I have 14 brothers and sisters!
Who has been a role model to you?
I’ve always wanted to be like my mom. She was very sweet, hardworking, and a great mom. If I had a superpower, I'd want to be able to fly to heaven to see her again.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be an accountant. I studied accounting in my country, Venezuela.
How would you describe yourself in one word and why?
Awesome! I’m friendly, hardworking, and honest and happy!
