Meet Lydia Hernandez

Lydia Hernandez, a project manager with Capital Project Management, defies expectations as a former honor student who disliked school. Her passion for continual learning drives her role, influenced by her parents' values of dignity and empathy. A self-described "Leo," Lydia's advice to her younger self echoes empowerment and fearlessness.

What is your favorite thing about your current role?

My favorite part about being a project manager is the never-ending chance to learn. With each new project and interactions with different people from different trades, I’m always learning something new. I’m either learning how something gets built, how a piece of equipment works, or I’m getting a better understanding of a code or local law. There’s always an opportunity to learn.

Who has been the biggest role model to you?

My parents are my role models. They taught me above all, to be a good person. To live with dignity, respect, morals, and empathy towards others. Everything else is a skill that can be learned, but those values are the foundation of who I am.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a police officer. I wanted to help people and save the world.

What brings you joy?

Dogs and music always bring a smile to my face. Dogs are so joyous, loving, and playful. There is no way anyone cannot be happy around a puppy! And who can stay still when some good music is playing? Those happy feet start moving and the soul starts to smile.

If you could give any advice to your younger self, what would it be?

Follow your dreams, assert yourself more often, and worry less.

What superpower would you choose for yourself?

If I could choose a superpower it would have to be flying. The feeling of flying freely through the sky and swooping through the clouds weightlessly must be both magical and peaceful. I would love the ability to go anywhere, even the most remote places of the earth, anytime I want to. That would be fantastic.

How would you describe yourself in one word? Why?

I will cheat on this question and say the one word that truly describes me is a “Leo”. I say it’s a cheat word because that one word has a long list of descriptions associated with it. For the most part, I'd say it describes me well.
